NYC-Area PTs Head to Haiti in Relief Effort
Headed by Cristiana Kahl Collins from Long Island University, in Brooklyn, New York, a group of physical therapists from the New York City area will be heading to Haiti to assist Advantage Haiti (US) and Expedicionarios da Saude (Brazil) in helping those injured and disabled by January’s earthquake.
The group will be in the Caribbean island country throughout the month of April, rotating teams for one- to two-week intervals. They are looking forward to developing a program to provide long term rehab assistance to the area as long “as the need remains,” a spokesperson said.
The group, which calls itself Physical Therapy for Humanity, consists of Collins, PT, PhD, from Brooklyn, NY; Susan Calise, PT, MA, Tara Denham, PT, MA, Jennifer Kelly, PT, DPT, NCS, and Clara Gaspari PT, DPT, all from New York, NY; and Cristen Clark, PT, DPT, from Weehawken, NJ.
Combined, these physical therapists have more than 100 years of experience in treating both adults and children. They will bring their expertise to help the vast numbers of those that have sustained crush-related injuries that have resulted in amputations, spinal cord injuries and head injuries,as well as those with multiple fractures.
Susan Calise will also be donating wheelchairs on behalf of the Wheelchair Sports Federation.
